Great to read reports today that the UK leads the way globally in training for creative fashion students with my old halls of learning, The London College Of Fashion, making it into the top ten, hurrah, at number eight.  But, amidst the jubilation,  there is alas, much dissension among many of the students who are not happy that they do not get enough or in some cases, any support towards preparation for the ‘real world’ of fashion business when they depart.

It is something I can atest to having witnessed and heard, time and time again throughout my time  taking on students for work experience at Clariscia Gill Couture.  The students often report to me, shocking indifference from the schools: from oversubscribing, questionable favoritism, to lack of tutoring around the all essential, business of fashion.

I despair and am regularly shocked that little has changed since my time (around when Noah built the Ark!) where we only had a three hour business lesson, once a week.  It would be great to have persons with actual live business acumen come in and  impart the all important real experiences with the students.

I hope the reports findings will take on board the dissatisfaction from many of the students.  Whilst not all may have what it takes to be destined for a future career in fashion, many do and it’s not fair for them to be left feeling they have wasted an important part of their lives and money preparing for a place in a trade that will never happen.  Get with the programme fashion universities and forge links with the many talented experienced business professionals who are happy to assist.
