Clariscia Gill Accessories – Kente Cloth Origins

Kente accessories

The Kente Cloth is an ever popular pattern that has been admired by many people across the globe. When looking at Clariscia Gill’s modern adaptation of the cloth, it inspired me to research into it’s history.

It was first conceived in a village called Bonwire by the Ashanti people of Ghana, and has become a huge part of their history.

It is said that two farmers, who were brothers, from the village, came across a spider spinning a web and were completely fascinated by the beauty of the pattern. They then decided they would try to recreate what they had seen using black and white Raffia fibres (from a Raffia Tree).

Although they created the first Kente Cloth using this material, after they presented what they had made to their King (Nana Osei TuTu), the cloth started to be made using the costly fabric of imported silk, therefore becoming associated with Ashanti royalty. The cloth was then used in global trade for many things such as ivory, gold and even slaves.

It is also said that men became the sole manufacturers of the cloth as women’s menstrual cycles were thought to interfere with the production of the Kente Cloth …

As time went on, the materials of the cloth evolved and     cotton and rayon became the more popular choice,           making it more affordable for a wider range of people.     To this day, the patterned cloth is just as popular as it     was, if not more! Being styled by celebrities such as         Solange Knowles, hip hop group Salt N’ Pepa and             designer Clariscia Gill! Check out her online store where Kente Cloth Belts and other items using this fabric are     available for purchase.

Clariscia Gill Accessories – The ‘Manbag’

Men have finally caught up with women and realised that we have been right all along! Carrying your belongings in a bag is a lot easier then stuffing your pockets full, especially in this day and age. With our ever-growing reliance on technology, men now have a lot more things to haul around. iPhones, iPads, iPods and laptops have become a necessity in day to day life, which is probably the main reason why men have adopted our habits in carrying bags; for all of that ‘i-stuff’.

5x13_Mans_bag

According to the market intelligence firm Euromonitor, bags intended for men make up nearly a fifth of the luxury handbag market, and are continuing to climb.
Of course style is an important factor when choosing your ‘man bag’, but let’s face it, not all men are brave enough to rock a leopard print Burberry Tote bag.

When talking to a client, Ken Musprat, who commissioned a bag from Clariscia Gill’s Couture Accessories service, we asked Ken what it was he was looking for alongside practicality and functionality. Here is what he told us:

1.What were your needs for the bag?
To keep all my i-stuff together as I constantly misplaced them.

2. Had you tried to find a bag to suit your needs?
Looked online and also on high streets to no availability.

3. Has the bag met the needs?
The bag is great, now I know where everything is and with their relevant cables and plugs.

4. Please add any other comments you may have
So much easier to work with you direct to explain how I wanted everything Laid out for ease of access.

As you can see in this picture, Ken is delighted to have all his ‘bits’ in one place …;-)  a45cdf5c6b64c307d7ea5c1075c09099

Mary-Lisa and friends – Ascot Ladies

Mary-Lisa and friends

Clariscia met these gorgeous looking ladies on her journey into work this morning. Mary-Lisa and friends brought a colourful touch of summer splendour to Brixton with their lovely attire and hats on their way to the Royal Ascot Horse Race.

We are loving their sensible footwear plan with co-ordinating flip flops with a change of shoes neatly nearby.  We all at CGHQ wish them a lucky successful wager.
