CG’s Winter Warmers’

We’re sure you will agree that you cannot beat a good coat on a crisp winters day to help wrap away the winter woe’s.

To achieve this, Clariscia’s three C’s comprising of; good cut, colour and cloth are essential.

Here CG uses two fabrics, a ribbed wool from a French fabric house famed for their strong use of colour and established since 1947.
The coat, in rich royal purple, is teamed with one of their plain stretch wools to achieve this effect for an updated take on a classic refer coat. Cut with a deeper dolman armhole, it gives plenty of room for movement and comfort.

If you have been worn out looking for lipsticks that will suit your darker skin complexion, take note of this new brand, MDMflow.

Florence Adepoju is the brains behind this new range of cosmetics. Starting out in her career as a scientist, her track changed following the problems she herself had encountered finding suitable shades to work with the pigment of her skin. This led to her becoming the founder of MDMflow make-up brand after she began making her own lipsticks.

We shall be hot footing it over to Topshop where Florence’s range is currently stocked. Bravo Florence, we wish you every success with the brand.

Winter coat designs by Clariscia Gill

As I readied myself for the autumn/winter 2015 season, preparing my mind for the forecasted ‘coldest UK’ winter to hit us for 50 years, I reflected upon how much I like to design, make and wear a good wool jacket or coat. I had always found it difficult to find a coat that fitted me in the right places, accommodated what I was wearing underneath and had the right cut to be loose and stylish enough that it did not look, well, frumpy …
So that’s how I started making them myself. I took a delve into the first place I start after the design is done, the fabric which led me to the world of this humble animal, the sheep, from whence it all starts. Well, I can tell you, humble they are not and I encountered a few surprises and striking animals during my research.

The Barbados Blackbelly Sheep (I kid you not..)

Briton became involved with this rapidly growing trade, so much so that by the twelfth century, wool was to become one of England’s most successful assets enabling it to be exported to neighbouring countries around Europe. That strength remains with British wool still being much sought after around the globe.

There are so many breeds of sheep and they can be found in all the five continents. Cross breeding them is the main way to obtain the different qualities and types of the wool. Not being a natural condition to be covered head to foot in a thick hot woolly fleece, the sheep must be sheared within given times in order that they do not encounter harm. As well as the obvious heat problems, the fleeces attract flies whose larvae can cause major havoc.

Some of these creatures are simply majestic and some so cross bred as to not even have a name for the breeds like this one above. I shall however from now on pay more thought to this animal when choosing my wool cloths, they are responsible for giving us so much.

I thank ewe …

Charli's giant 'afro' head-piece

Charli’s giant ‘afro’ head-piece

If a hat and a wig had a love child, this would be the result. CharliAt aged just 28 years old, Charli Le Mindu has worked with just about every top avant-garde performance artiste you could think of including, Lady Gaga, Cirque du Soleil performers to current stage sensation, FK Twigs. Charli maintains however, that his all time favourite clients are, the many little old ladies who trek to his Parisienne Atelier for the regular hats he designs and makes for them.

His story is charted in his newly released book; Haute Coffieur, charting his humble beginnings to his rapid status as re-known mix of, hairdresser, come milliner, come wig maker.

Great visuals in this book and we at CGHQ recommend it for budding fashion students;

Autumn is here; what jacket to wear?

IMG_4297

Reversible jacket …….’Tertia’ by Clariscia Gill

We all know that wardrobe problem at this time of the year; it’s not cold enough for a heavy coat but it’s also not so hot that you can’t leave the house without a few extra layers. Clariscia has shared the evolution of a jacket she has designed to help combat that problem of our awkward British weather.

Made from cloqué (literally meaning ‘blistered’ in French), this double layered or compound fabric with a Jacquard effect, is warm enough to protect you from the cold, yet light enough so that you don’t feel too heavy. With one side of the fabric being an ecru colour with hints of antique gold and noir, and the other showing a deep noir, reversing the pattern of deconstructed roses, Clariscia’s immediate observation was that this stunning piece of fabric could only become a reversible style jacket. Why choose only one side if you can wear them both!

IMG_1012

Voila, by using both sides, CG has created a jacket of which you get double usage by reversing it.

Cut with a Japanese Kimono-like sleeve, it has a drawstring belt made from Nubuck suede (cowhide leather that has been rubbed on the outer side of the hide to give it a feel like that of suede), that brings it together with a fully flared peplum, Clariscia has left the choice entirely up to you; you can wear it from the start of your busy work day slipping easily into your dressier evening events by reversing it.
